THE OSYKA NAME
Osyka
is a Choctaw Indian (Native American) word meaning “Soaring
Eagle.”
Osyka
is the name of a small town in Mississippi located on Highway
51 equally distant from Jackson, Mississippi and New Orleans,
Louisiana. Legend has it that “Miss Osyka,” a
tribal Princess who died young, is buried at Gardner Springs
in Osyka. Her grief stricken father, the Tribe’s Chief,
requested that the town’s founding fathers name the
town to bear his daughter’s name. They did.
